Early Training Camp News and Fantasy Football Impact

I’m in the midst of some travel at the moment and will continue with my training camp battle commentary in the coming days.  For Now, I wanted to give you quick commentary regarding some of the early training camp news that is circulating in the news threads.  I ran an update of the Fantasy Football Almanac last week and will be emailing those who signed up for free updates with information on how to download the updated versions.  If you haven’t yet purchased the 2025 Almanac, you can do that here:

Training Camp News and Fantasy Football Impact

Terry McLaurin’s Holdout

I’m not concerned about it.  The Commanders aren’t going to start the season with their best wide receiver outside of camp.  The main complication here is that not only is McLaurin in the last season of his deal, and not only have recent wide receiver contracts been much more lucrative, but the Commanders also gave Deebo Samuel a little contract bump when they acquired him.  McLaurin is absolutely in line with a lucrative extension.  He has the leverage and Washington will end up paying for him.  My only concern with respect to McLaurin is that players who hold out for long periods are more susceptible to soft tissue and tendon injuries.  It would be wide for Washington to just sign him.  They have the cap room and the need.  It’ll get done.

James Cook Holdout

This holdout could take a little more time.  I like James Cook’s ability and he’s the best Bills RB on the roster.  But unlike McLaurin in Washington, the Bills will be ok if Cook doesn’t show up.  I think this holdout could last a couple of weeks, but I don’t see this dragging into the season.  Beyond holdout-related injury concerns, I’m not worried about this one either.

Noah Fant

Fant was waived this week. I’ll be keeping an eye on his landing spot, but the more important thing of note is that the new Seahawks offense is primed for a standout TE. With Fant out of the picture, rookie Elijah Arroyo should be in line for a very strong rookie season.  He’s offering tremendous fantasy draft value at the moment.  You will see me boost his ranking substantially when my next update comes out in August.

Quinshon Judkins

Judkins got himself into stupid off field trouble.  I’ll keep the off field commentary out of this and talk purely form a fantasy football point of view.  Runing backs are a commodity in today’s NFL.  Coming into camp, I felt Judkins would absolutely win the starting job early in camp.  Now he probably will win it early in the season.  What’s troubling for Judkins is Jerome Ford is adequate.  More troubling is that fellow rookie Dylan Sampson is a very good prospect as well.  I’m not going to hit the panic button yet, but this could have opened a window for Sampson to get more training camp touches.  I’m paying very close attention.

Justin Fields

He has a toe injury.  It’s an annoying thing to happen for my favorite sleeper QB, but I’m also not that put off by it.  If this limits his ability to learn the offense in training camp, that actually bodes well for him running more earlier in the season while he plays himself into the offense.
